The holiday season has officially arrived! I’m not going to admit that my Christmas tree was up a week before Thanksgiving. As you may or may not know, I live in Puerto Rico, and if you know a little bit about our culture, any holiday is another reason for us to drink. We celebrate every single holiday and we go all out. Christmas season celebrations for us last from Thanksgiving to Three Kings Day (Jan. 6). If drinks are as incorporated into your holidays as they are in ours, here’s a couple of recipes for your next celebration. I’ve separated them between sweet (milk, chocolate, coffee, coconut) flavored drinks and fruity (all which are either red or green colored to stick with the holiday theme). And three non-alcoholic drinks for the non drinkers or light-weights like me.
Sweet Drinks:
Coquito!! – The number one traditional Puerto Rican holiday drink. Christmas is not Christmas here without a glass of coquito. Ingredients: 2 cans of coconut cream, 1 can condensed milk, 1 can evaporated milk, 1 teaspoonful of vanilla extract, 1 quart white rum, 1 tablespoonful ground cinnamon Procedure: Combine all the ingredients, chill and enjoy. Add ice and cinnamon sticks as desired. Egg Nog – Traditional American Holiday Drink. Ingredients: 12 jumbo egg yolks, 1 pound granulated sugar, 1 quart whole milk, 1 liter spiced rum, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Procedure: Beat yolks and sugar in a bowl until mixture thickens. Then add remaining ingredients and stir until well blended. Chill and enjoy. Makes aprox 12 servings. Mudslide – Coffee flavored, creamy delight. Ingredients: 1 oz vodka, 1 oz coffee liqueur, 1 oz Irish cream liqueur Procedure: Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake well. Strain and enjoy. Add ice, cinnamon, whipped cream, chocolate syrup as desired. Makes 1 serving. Orgasm – I know, I know, you’re probably saying: “you’re telling me to serve orgasm titled drinks at a holiday event!?” If you’ve ever tried one you understand why I think it’s a perfect drink for the holiday season. It’s a great combination of coffee and amaretto flavors perfect for the holidays. (Just don’t tell your guests the name of what they are drinking). Ingredients: 1 oz coffee liqueur, 1 oz amaretto liqueur, 1 oz Irish cream liqueur Procedure: Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake well. Strain and enjoy. Add ice, cinnamon, whipped cream, chocolate syrup as desired. Makes 1 serving. 43 con Leche – Also known as Milk & 43. Tastes just like milk and sugar, you won’t even know you’re drinking alcohol. Beware if you get easily tipsy (like me). Besides the delicious taste, its simplicity makes it great for entertaining. Ingredients: 1 oz Licor 43® liqueur, 4 oz cold milk Procedure: Combine ingredients and enjoy. Add ice, cinnamon, whipped cream, chocolate syrup as desired. Makes 1 serving.Fruity Drinks (red & green holiday inspired colors):
Appletini / Apple Martini – Apple Awesomeness. Ingredients: 2 oz. Vodka, 1/2 oz. Apple Pucker Schnapps or 1/2 oz. Apple Juice or Cider Procedure: Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake well and strain into a martini glass. Decorate with apple slice. Makes 1 serving. Apple Jolly Rancher – Candy Explosion Ingredients: 1 oz Sour Apple Pucker schnapps, 1 oz vodka, 1 splash of sweet and sour mix, 1 squirt 7-Up soda Procedure: Combine and serve on the rocks and enjoy. Makes 1 serving. Cosmopolitan Martini – Hello! Carrie Bradshaw!! Ingredients: 1/2 oz orange liqueur, 1 oz vodka, juice of 1/2 limes, 1 splash cranberry juice Procedure: Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake well and strain into a martini glass. Makes 1 serving. Strawberry Margarita – Strawberry twist on the lemon Mexican classic. Ingredients: 1/2 oz strawberry schnapps, 1 oz tequila, 1/2 oz triple sec, 1 oz lemon juice, salt Procedure: Rub rim of cocktail glass with lemon juice and dip rim in salt. Combine schnapps, tequila, triple sec, lemon juice, into a cocktail shaker with ice. Strain into the salt-rimmed glass, and serve. Makes 1 serving.Non Alcoholic Drinks:
Coquito – combine all ingredients mentioned in alcohol recipe above except the rum (duh!). Chill and enjoy. EggNog – again, combine all ingredients mentioned in alcohol recipe above except the rum. Chill and enjoy. Shirley Temple – my all-time favorite! Ingredients: 1/4 cup lemon-lime flavored carbonated beverage, 1 1/2 tablespoons grenadine syrup Procedure: Combine lemon-lime soda, grenadine and ice and stir. Decorate with cherry if desired. Makes 1 serving.I am not responsible for any unflattering photos your friends and family might upload to facebook after drinking these. If unflattering photos of you are uploaded to facebook after drinking the non-alcoholic recipes, you have a problem. Happy Holidays!! Cheers!! 😀
